Week 9

Articles, The Corner

All these weeks are starting to blend together in a .500 haze. I cannot seem to get over the hump and have a huge week. Before we move on to week 9 lets take a quick look back at some of the better games. The most competitive game, also the hardest game for me, was the Dallas at Detroit game. Calvin Johnson is amazing, and I love having him on my fantasy team.  He ended the game with 14 catches for 329 yards and 1 touchdown.  He was tackled 4 times inside the 4 yard line, so you can imagine the type of game he should have had. The Cowboys continue to figure out new ways to lose games. On their last drive they were called for a holding penalty that stopped the clock and gave the Lions more time to come back and win. I blame this loss on Jason Garrett, I am not sure why yet, but I seems easy enough to do. Detroit has their bye week this week, and that win makes it a lot easier to look forward to. Another week for the 49ers, and another huge win for their offense. I know they were only playing the Jags, but still to run for over 200 yards and 4 touchdowns is huge. They controlled this game and sent a message to every team in the NFL. They are for real and look like they are back on the right track. Denver came out a little slow again this week, but instead of rolling over they came back and scored 38 unanswered points. Washington struggled with their offense in the second half, and the Broncos came out and knocked them out over and over again. The slate of games last week was not really any good, and this week we have another crap bag of games. Even though I’m not really excited by any of these games we still have a chance to make some money, so let’s look forward to week 9, and pick some winners.

Last week- 7-6

Dicks Picks- 6-7

Dick’s Picks in Blue

Cincinnati (-3) over Miami

Dicks Picks: Cincinnati -3

I’m killing these Thursday night games. I need to actually put a little money on one of these games, but as soon as I do that I will go on an 8 game losing streak. Finally the Bengals played up to their potential. The destroyed the Jets 49-9, and Andy Dalton is starting to put together a nice season. He threw for over 300 yards and 5 touchdowns, 4 to Marvin Jones, and is taking care of the ball. They are still struggling in the running game, but if they can keep up this passing attack along side with their defense they might be going places. The Dolphins did their best Cowboy impression and lost a game they had no business of losing. The Dolphins biggest problem is their offensive line. They gave up six sacks to a banged up Patriots team, and they are on track to break David Carr’s only record (most sacked QB in a season). The Bengals could get 10 sacks on Thursday, and even if they don’t they should easily cover the 3 points.

AJ Green and Gio Bernard

Carolina (-7) over Atlanta

Dicks Picks Carolina -7

This Panthers team can do one thing really well, and that’s beat up on bad teams. I thought this Falcons team could turn it around and show up, but last week in Arizona they basically started to wave the white flag. Carolina is starting to turn around their season, and is a possible wild-card team. If they want to make the playoffs they need to continue to beat up on these bad teams. Cam Newton has been playing some of his best football, and is starting to trust his teammates. If he can keep this up they are going to be one of those teams no one wants to play. Carolina should be able to keep up their win streak, and cover the 7 points.

Cam Newton, Mike Tolbert and Harry Douglas

Dallas (-10.5) over Minnesota

Dicks Picks Dallas -10.5

Who is going to be the quarterback for the Vikings? Is it Matt Cassel’s turn to play the worst game in Viking’s history? They have no answers at the quarterback position, but for some reason they don’t rely on their one asset. Adrian Peterson cannot get started in the backfield, and they get down so often they just go away from him. For some reason I think this is the week they go to him, and he runs for 200 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Cowboys have given up 400 yards to 4 different quarterbacks this year, and if one of these quarterbacks throws for over 400 yards someone should be fired. All jokes aside the Cowboys need to win this game to continue their mediocrity. So far the Cowboys are 7-1 against the spread this year, and that is one of the main reasons I am choosing them to cover the 11 points. Also check this out if you want to hear what Dez was saying on the sidelines during his “tantrum”.

Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Adrian Peterson

New Orleans (-6.5) over New York Jets

Dicks Picks Saints -6.5

If it were not for the last-minute loss in that Patriot game the Saints would be 7-0, and would be the talk of the NFL. But they lost that game, and we continue to leave them out of the conversation for best team in the NFL. They seem to be firing on all cylinders offensively, and are even getting huge production from their defense. This might be one of the most complete teams in the league. The Jets and Geno Smith continue to struggle on the road. He threw 2 more interceptions against the Bengals last week, and even got benched at the end of the game. I do think he will start this game, but I don’t think that make a bit of difference. The Saints win this game and blow out the Jets.

Jimmy Graham, Kenny Stills and Jeremy Kerley

Tennessee (-3) over St Louis

Dicks Picks Titans -3

The Rams surprised a lot of people on Monday night when it came down to the last play of the game. They ran the ball better than anyone else had against the Seahawks (200 yards). Even though Kellen Clemens threw for more yards the Wilson he still couldn’t put the ball in the endzone. Now with the uncertainty of Zac Stacey this week I smell a lot of trouble for the Rams. The Titans are coming off of their bye week and are trying to keep pace in their division.  They need this win if they want to stay in the wildcard race and should be able to get the W. The Kellen Clemens led Rams don’t scare me or the Titans, so I’ll take them to cover the 3 points.

Jake Locker and Zac Stacey (if he plays)

Kansas City (-3.5) over Buffalo

Dicks Picks Kansas City -3.5

This line is really weird. The Chiefs are 8-0 and the Bills are 3-5 and are starting their 4thstring quarterback. Why is this line so low? I know the Chiefs aren’t a power house team that crushes their opponents, but still only 3.5 points. I think Vegas knows something about this game, and it seems fishy. Thad Lewis was hurt last week and they don’t know if he is going to be able to play. If that is the case expect Jeff Tuel or Matt Flynn to get the start, and for the line to jump 5 points. Even with the extra points I will take the Chiefs to cover.

Jamaal Charles and Fred Jackson

San Diego (-1.5) over Washington

Dicks Picks San Deigo -1.5

It seems like every week there is a home dog team that is getting 1.5 points that ends up covering. This might fall under that category, but I just don’t like the Redskins this year….or any year to be honest. RGIII takes 2 steps forward and then one giant step back. He had his other knee injured last week, but should be able to play. San Diego is coming off their bye; I am expecting a huge game for Ryan Mathews. He has run for over 100 yards in his last 2 games, and with this putrid Washington defense on the horizon I see a lot of the same. Even though this line scares me I’ll still take the Chargers give the 1.5 point.

Ryan Mathews and Keenan Allen

Oakland (-3) over Philadelphia

Dicks Picks: Raiders! -3

Oh Eagles you had so much promise at the beginning of the year, and now you are starting Matt Barkley, and struggling to score any points. This offense was supposed to revolutionize the game, but it has yet to take off. The Eagles would benefit from a quarterback like Terrelle Pryor. Last week he ran for over 100 yards, but struggled a bit with his passing game. The Eagle’s defense is one of the worst in the NFL, so I think the Raiders should be able to run all over the Eagles and cover the 3 points.

Darren McFadden, Terrelle Pryor and LeSean McCoy

Seattle (-16) over Tampa Bay

Dicks Picks Seattle -16

Tampa Bay is bad + Seattle is good at home = Seattle cover.

Marshawn Lynch

Cleveland (+3) over Baltimore

Dicks Picks BROWNS! +3

Hey Jason Campbell is not that bad. Way to go Jason!! All the Browns do is cover, and all the Ravens do is play close games. The Ravens are struggling on offense this year and it all start with Joe Flacco and his contract. They paid that man too much money, and now don’t have any money to spend on anything else. It doesn’t matter who is the quarter back for the Browns Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron are still relevant players. I think Josh Gordon might be really really good. He always seems to get open, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he got open again a couple of times and help the Browns cover the 3 points.

Josh Gordon, Jordan Cameron and Ray Rice And Jason Campbell!

New England (-7) over Pittsburgh

Dicks Picks Patriots -7

And the Boston winning tradition continues with another title for the city of Boston. Congrats to the Red Sox in their World Series Championship. Does anyone think that the Pats won’t win in a blow out to finish off the week for Boston? Last week the Dolphins should have been able to close out the Pats, but they hit the upright and the Patriots took over from there. Even though Tom Brady seems to be regressing this season they still seem to be able to win games they don’t deserve to. The Steelers should play another tough game, but this just doesn’t seem to be their year. Another win for Boston and the Patriots cover the 7 points.

Gronk, Steven Ridley and Heath Miller

Indianapolis (-3) over Houston

Dicks Picks Houston +3

I really wanted to take the Texans this week, but I just feel like they might be one week off. They have benched a healthy Matt Schaub and have moved on to Case Keenum. I think they made the right move for the future, but this Colts team is tough out. Case Keenum is going to have to play mistake free football, and lead the Texans on some long time-consuming drives. The Colts are without Reggie Wayne, and need to find a replacement for him immediately. Is it going to be TY Hilton or Darrius Heyward-Bey? I think both should have good games, and they should be able to cover the 3 points.

TY Hilton and Andre Johnson

Green Bay (-11) over Chicago

Dicks Picks: Green Bay -11

This Packers teams keeps getting hit with injuries, but keep rolling with them and stepping up. Chicago is getting hit with the same amount of injuries, but has not been able to keep up the biggest strength (defense). Chicago has one of the worst defenses in the league, and the Packers have one of the best offenses. Green Bay should be able to take advantage of that discrepancy and cover the large 11 point spread.

Jordy Nelson, Jarrett Boykin, Eddie Lacy, Matt Forte and Brandon Marshall

Here’s to hoping that we can have more winners than losers. Enjoy your semi descent week of football. Let’s hope our bets fall the right way, and we don’t get hit by the back door.

Week 7

The Corner

Celebrate good times, I was over .500 this week. I finished the week at a strong 7-6-1, with the push being the Arizona at San Francisco game. It is kind of sad when you get excited after an average week, but with my last two weeks being stinkers, you have to take any win you can. At least I didn’t have the kind of week that Richard had. Dick’s Picks, while a clever name, were terrible last week going 3-11-1…..ouch. The biggest game of the week was the New Orleans Saints vs. the New England Patriots. What a good weekend for the city of Boston. They had the great last minute touchdown pass to beat the Saints, and the huge grand slam in the Red Sox game to beat the Tigers. When is the good luck for Boston sports teams going to run out? Since the year of 2000, in the four major American sports, they have to been 10 championship games winning 7 titles. This is getting a bit ridiculous, let the good people of Cleveland, Cincinnati, Seattle or maybe Dallas get to a title game and win a title. Enough with the Boston hate/love, and lets move on to week 7 of the NFL and hand out some more winners.

Dick’s Picks in Blue

Seattle (-6.5) over Arizona

Last week the Seahawks should have covered the 13.5 points if it weren’t for the botched field goal and return that the Titans had. Seattle’s Defense has looked impenetrable all year, and with the Arizona’s struggles on the offensive end I see a tough game for the Cards. Carson Palmer is not only going to have to play mistake free football, but he also has to play his best game in 5 years. Seattle’s offense has been their Achilles heel so far this year. They haven’t had a problem running the ball, but it’s just their passing game is non-existent. With the Arizona secondary, I don’t see the Seahawks throwing the ball all over the place, but I do see them doing enough to get the win and the 6.5 point cover.

Marshawn Lynch and Malcom Floyd

New England (-4.5) over New York Jets

Even though the Patriots might have gotten a little lucky last week against the Saints, I don’t think they will have to play that good of a game to beat the Jets. The Patriots are in the same situation they were a couple of weeks ago, with Amendola being hurt and all the question marks surrounding Gronk. Tom Brady has made some no name receivers into some household names, but this isn’t the same Tom Brady. He is not as accurate and has struggled this year on the deep ball. He needs Gronk to come back and help out in the intermediate throws. The Jets and Geno Smith took a step back last week after they looked so good against Atlanta. They struggled to move the ball against the Steelers and looked down right abysmal on the offensive side of the ball. This should be a low scoring game with the Pats winning another game for Boston, and getting the 4.5 point cover.

Julian Edelman and Mike Goodson

San Diego (-8.5) over Jacksonville

The good news for the Jags is that they covered last week, but the bad is they once again lost by double digits. With Cecil Shorts out with a dislocated shoulder, Justin Blackmon had a HUGE game. He caught 14 balls for 190, and it wasn’t all in garbage time…..he also single handily gave Richard his first win in our Fantasy Eliminator Challenge. San Diego was almost dead last in total defense, but basically shut out Andrew Luck and the Colts on Monday Night Football. Like I said the Jags have lost all of their games by over 10 points, and I see that trend continuing with a Chargers big win.

Kennan Allen and Justin Blackmon

Detroit (-3) over Cincinnati

What can I say I like the Lions this year? Also, the Bengals have had real struggles this year, exemplified by their game last week. How does Thad Lewis and the Buffalo Bills look good against you, and take you to overtime? Even after Andy Dalton’s best statistical game they still seemed to be missing something. They have all the weapons to be an elite team, but Andy Dalton is really holding them back. The Lions won a game without a huge contribution from Megatron and instead leaned on Reggie Bush and the White Wonder Kris Durham. This should be a close game, and if Calvin Johnson can make a few more plays I see the Lions eking out a close win and getting the cover.

Reggie Bush, Calvin Johnson, AJ Green and Gio Bernard

Buffalo (+8) over Miami

This is all riding on the fact that Thad Lewis is the starter for this game……I know how crazy is that shit. If for some reason, Matt Flynn is the starter I would change my pick in a heartbeat. Thad Lewis looked like a real deal NFL quarterback. He made big throws, and made a couple of plays with his feet. Miami is coming off of their bye week and a loss to Baltimore 2 weeks ago. They looked a little flat against the Ravens, but still had a chance to win it at the end. I’m pretty sure Miami get’s the win, but Buffalo will cover the 8 points.

Fred Jackson, Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace

Chicago (+1) over Washington

Washington suffered another defeat against the Cowboys last week, and still their only victory is over the Raiders. RGIII looks like a shell of himself still, and even though he had 77 yards rushing he still is missing something. The Bears got back on track against the Giants last Thursday. Brandon Marshall won’t be crying for the ball after his 2 touchdown performance. With him and Alshon Jeffery on the outside I see a huge game for Matt Forte. Washington is terrible against running backs, and they the Bears have one of the best dual threat running backs in the league. Chicago’s D has been a little suspect as of late, but I see them getting 2 or 3 turnovers, and turning one of them into a score. With Chicago actually getting a point, I see a win and an easy cover.

Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte and Pierre Garcon

Dallas (+2.5) over Philadelphia

Both of these teams are coming off of wins last week. Strange enough Philadelphia had a season low in yards, but still put up 31 points. Dallas also had a down week offensively, but they got huge contributions from their special teams. This should be a very entertaining offensive game mostly because both of theses teams have bad defenses. These games are usually very high scoring, and with these defenses I don’t see that changing…that being said I like the over at 56. I’m hoping that Michael Vick is out once again, so the Cowboys don’t have to face another mobile quarterback. They struggled with RGIII last week giving up 77 yards rushing, and Vick is average a little more than 61 yards a game. With DeMarcus Ware being out for the Cowboys, their defensive line has only one projected starter on the line. If Vick is playing, he could see big running lanes and take advantage of them for huge chunks of yards. I do think the Cowboys should win this game, and with the extra 2.5 points I feel even better.

DeSean Jackson Dez Bryant and LeSean McCoy

Carolina (-6.5) over St. Louis

I’m not sure who the Carolina Panthers really are. When they lose they look awful, but when they win, and Cam Newton plays well they look unbeatable. The Rams are somehow 3-3…go ahead look that up I didn’t believe that the first time either. The Rams are a hard team to figure out. They have been down by 20 in all of their losses, and their wins have been against the Cardinals, Jags and Texans (those teams have a combined 5 wins). I don’t think the Rams are any good, and this is one of those games I think they don’t show up and loose by 20. So I’ll give the 6.5 points and the Panthers in a blow out win.

Steve Smith and Zac Stacey

Tampa Bay (+7.5) over Atlanta

I know that the Falcons over these past few seasons have been a dominate home team, but this is not the same Falcons team. They have already lost two home games, and I’m not saying they lose to this Bucs team, but 7.5 points are a lot. This Falcons team is without 2 of its top 4 offensive weapon, and the possibility of a third if Rodey White is out. This Tampa Bay team is by no means a good football team, but I would say they are almost even with the Falcons so far this year. Their defense is much better than the Falcons, and they at least have one healthy elite receiver. The Falcons might as well give up on this season and trade Tony Gonzalez to the Chiefs. Get a 3rd or 4th round draft pick and look forward to the future. This also gives the Chiefs something they desperately need…just make the trade already Atlanta. Neither team is any good so I’ll take the Bucs getting the 7.5 points

Doug Martin and Tony Gonzalez

San Francisco (-5) over Tennessee

Is Ryan Fitzpatrick playing quarterback for the Titans still? Do the 49ers still have a good defense? If you answered yes to either or both of the questions, you know why I take the 49ers giving the 5 points.

Frank Gore and Colin Kaepernick with a break out game

Kansas City (-7) over Houston

Last week I thought the Raiders could go into Arrowhead and get a victory. I was wrong, and the main reason was because I underestimated this Chiefs defense. They are playing amazing right now and are turning turnovers into points. Alex Smith is doing his best Alex Smith impression and is keeping this Chiefs team on track. The Texans are huge clusterfuck right now. They cannot seem to do anything right, and no matter who is playing quarterback a pick 6 is coming. I think it is time to play Case Keenum. He is the one guy that you don’t know what you are getting. In 2006, the Cowboys made the switch from the struggling Drew Bledsoe to Tony Romo. He brought a spark to the team and started off 5-1. I’m not saying this is the same situation, but the Texans need some kind of spark. So for now I’ll take the Chiefs giving the 7 points.

Jamaal Charles and Arian Foster

Green Bay (+10) over Cleveland

Green Bay has lost at least one (Randall Cobb) and possibly 2 (James Jones) of their receivers for this game. Joe Hadden will be locked up against Jordy Nelson. So Jermichael Finley and Jarrett Boykin are going to have to step up. Green Bay has been running the ball successfully so far, and Eddie Lacey has really grown in this offense. The Lions won in Cleveland by over 10 last week, and the Browns will struggle again this week in Green Bay. The main reason I am taking the Packers is because of the one, the only Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeden. He threw the worst interception I have ever seen, and that’s coming from a Tony Romo fan. So the Packers win big and cover the 10 points.

Jermichael Finley and Josh Gordon

Baltimore (+1) over Pittsburgh

Good news for you Steeler fans you finally got your first win. Bad news you beat the Jets, and your offense could only muster a single touchdown. The defense looked better causing 4 turnovers, but Geno Smith turns the ball over on the road. Baltimore’s offense looks almost as bad. They struggled to do anything against the Packers early, but did manage to score two late touchdowns. In the battle of bad offenses and old overrated defenses, I’ll take the Baltimore. Only because I think they are just a little better, but mostly because they are getting 1 point.

Ray Rice and Antonio Brown

Denver (-7) over Indianapolis

For the first time all year the Denver Broncos did not cover the spread, and it was only 27.5 points. They hit the over for the 6th straight week, and I see that trend continuing for a 7th week….especially after Jim Irsay started talking shit. Peyton is going to come in there and take care of business. He will act like this is just another game, but you know he wants to go back to the house he built and give it to the Colts. They basically thought he was done and gave up on him. He has been at his best this season. It’s like his wife left him for a new guy, so he went and got a younger hotter girl and is bringing her back home to rub it in his ex-wife’s face. The ex-wife (the Colts) is coming off a big loss on a public stage, and with this game being a Sunday night game they will need to show up. I’m really hoping this is a back and forth game like the Denver Dallas game, and if that’s the case, we all win. But I think Peyton will give the people of Indianapolis his goofy smile and wave, and cover the 7 points.

Every Denver Player not named Monte Ball, Reggie Wayne and TY Hilton

New York Giants (-3) over Minnesota

I don’t know about this game. Even while I’m typing this, I have no idea whom I should pick. Do I really think the Giants can win an actual NFL game? How good is Josh Freeman, and how much of the offense does he actually know? These teams are really similar to me. Both are terrible offensively, their quarterbacks have huge question marks, and both defenses are really underwhelming. What a Monday Night game!!! I guess I’ll take the Vikings….no wait the Giants to get their first win….wait do I really think Eli Manning wont throw 3 interceptions. I’m flipping a coin……and it landed on heads, so that means the Giants…..I’m already regretting this.

Adrian Peterson and ummm I guess Brandon Jacobs (no lie I just had to google Giants running backs to remember his name)

Let the good times roll and here is to another good week. As always, I hope you enjoy your week of football. Let’s hope our bets fall the right way, and you don’t get hit by the back door.
